Reactivating the Money Mentoring Team

These are the years when I often urge parents to “trade their kids.” That is, it may be much easier for your daughter to hear things from her best friend’s mom that she can’t bear to hear from you—and likewise, your son’s best friend may be more comfortable getting financial guidance in your house than in his own. Now is the time to reactivate your money mentoring team. (If you’ve just entered the book in this chapter, see this page for information about assembling a money mentoring team.)

Assuming the arrangement has worked out thus far, send your money mentors a note asking them to renew their agreement for another couple of years. (You may also want to add people who have come into your life who you think might be helpful.) Give them an update on your young teen and an idea of some issues and actions you hope they can help with. Remember that reciprocity is key here, and that your money mentor, just like you, may be busy and overwhelmed. Make sure you offer a gift certificate to dinner, an overnight stay for their kids at your house, or an equally meaningful gesture.

Here in Stage Three, you might ask the money mentor to:

Share how his career has unfolded. Is he doing what he thought he would be doing? What does he enjoy most about his work? What does he wish someone had told him when he was 14?

Take your teen to a meeting (a business meeting, city council meeting, club meeting) where adults are talking, planning, and considering ideas that relate to financial choices and decisions.

Email your teenager a list of books that would make good reading and provide ideas about the future.

Include your teen ina project to which she might make a small contribution.
